Frequently asked questions
How do I get started?
Complete the first-run flow to grant access to your media library (if prompted), then create or open a project. Use Help → Show App Tour anytime for a walkthrough of the main UI.
Where is my data stored?
Projects live on disk as .promptkit packages (each contains your SwiftData database and related files). By default they’re under ~/Movies/PromptKit Projects. You can choose a different folder during setup; PromptKit remembers that location.
Your library is not synced to our servers. Optional features (for example, importing from Runway) only use the network when you explicitly use them, and they talk to the service you connect—not a PromptKit-hosted cloud.
How do I back up my projects?
-
In-app: PromptKit can copy projects into a Backup folder next to your projects (under your chosen PromptKit Projects directory). Frequency and retention are configurable in Settings.
-
System: Include your projects folder (and Backup, if you use it) in Time Machine or another backup you already use.
I moved or renamed files on disk and something looks broken—what should I do?
If imported media was referenced (not fully copied into the project), moving originals can break links. Use any relink or import flows the app offers, or re-import from the new location. Keeping media inside the project’s managed storage reduces this class of issue.
Does PromptKit work offline?
Yes, for normal browsing and editing. Features that call external APIs (such as Runway import) need a network connection when you use them.
Known issues and troubleshooting
-
No thumbnails or missing files: Confirm the original files still exist at the path the project expects; check Settings and macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files and Folders if PromptKit can’t read a disk location you expect.
-
“Wrong” projects folder: If you picked a custom location during onboarding, new projects and backups use that folder—look there, not only under the default Movies path.
-
Tour or onboarding: Help → Show App Tour replays the spotlight tour; onboarding is only for first setup.
(Adjust this list as real user reports come in.)
